Horedose Hill, New England. September 1989. Twelve-year-old Lena Lee disappears during a violent storm. The only witnesses are an elderly man who can barely remember what happened and a homeless alcoholic convinced that something supernatural took her. Sam Finch and four of his friends begin searching for Lena and discover that her disappearance is connected to a conflict that has lasted for more than fifteen centuries. At its centre is the Gnosynaikon, a legendary book believed to possess extraordinary powers. The legend is wrong. The Gnosynaikon is not magical. It is a living record of scientific knowledge created and preserved by women throughout history, as well as a chronicle of the persecution, appropriation and erasure they endured. Meriptah, the organisation created to protect that knowledge, has spent centuries fighting Vermii, a powerful network determined to suppress it and preserve the established order. But Lena's disappearance exposes another secret: a classified government programme believed to have failed decades earlier may have produced extraordinary biological consequences. As Sam and his friends move closer to the truth, they begin to discover that they are not merely investigating the mystery. They are part of it. What begins as the search for a missing girl becomes a struggle over knowledge, power, identity and a scientific legacy that some have spent centuries trying to erase.
